Sterling Outlook (7th November 2006)

US mid-term elections take place today, with voting booths in most states opening at 7am EST (12:00GMT). Three opinion polls published over the past 48 hours suggest the Democrat lead over the Republicans has been cut to 4-7%, from 11-14% two weeks ago (The Guardian).

Bush's party are defending majorities in the House of Representatives, where all 435 seats are up for grabs, and the Senate where 33 of the 100 seats are at stake. There is speculation that the USD could elicit support if a "balanced" result ensues: eg, the Democrats retake the House of Representatives, and the Republicans maintain a Senate majority.

It should be possible to "call" who has won House and Senate at 04:00GMT tomorrow, according to the Daily Telegraph. GBP/USD has respected the 1.9030 former resistance-turned-support level through the London morning-to-date, having tripped stops above 1.9030 during today's Asian session. 1.9065 is an appreciation obstacle, being a 61.8% Fibo retracement point of the fall from last Wednesday's 12-week peak of 1.9137 to yesterday"s 10-day low of 1.8949.
